JUST READ ONE BOOK PER MONTH IN 2018
I am a SPONGE. I just LOVE learning. Like I legit cannot get get enough information into this noggin. GIVE ME ALL THE KNOWLEDGE!
Sometimes I wonder how I didn’t end up being a career student and just studying forever. I used to read sooooo much when I was in school. I won all the reading contests, joined the Newberry and Caldecott Book Club in school and polished off every series of books that any school age girl could dream of. Little House on the Prairie, Babysitters Club, American Girl, just to name a few. I read ‘em all. OK now I’m just bragging…. But those were some kick ass books back then, right?
One of my many goals for 2018 (I’m not a huge resolution fan, because I think goals are important every day of the year, not just the first day.) is to read one book per month. Just ONE. One fucking book.
You know why? Because I NEVER read anymore. I mean, I read… we all “read” every day. Stop signs, emails, our kids homework, reports, bills, BLEH. I don’t mean that kind of reading. I mean REALLY reading something. Like for fun! Do you ever just read for fun?
Now I don’t want to get into a long debate about reading actual books vs your Kindle or Nook… or using a book on tape or listening to an Audible book vs actually reading something. That’s not what this is about.
Personally…. I enjoy both. Sometimes I don’t have time to read and I prefer to listen….. Like while traveling or laying in bed when I’m just too tired to hold up a book. And other times I prefer a book… a good physical, page turning book. What do you like?
My plan: Make a list of 12 books that I want to read. Find them. Read them. Easy peasey right?!
Don’t think you have TIME to read? Guess again. What about that commute to work? Sitting at your kids gymnastics practice? Playing around on Facebook on your break again? Working that treadmill hard at the gym?
Use that time girl! Bust out a romance novel, crack open that detective drama, or relax while you read about personal development. Seriously?! Don’t waste a single minute!
I have a ONE HOUR commute to the ‘shop’ each way. YES GIRL… ONE HOUR. I know. I know. That’s a topic for another blog. Anyways….. I usually just tune out the world and listen to the radio or honestly, ride in complete silence….but my NEW plan is to plug my phone into my truck (did you know you could do that now?!) and listen to a BOOK.
I’m also dedicating 30 minutes before bed every night for this. (I’m trying a new ‘night routine’ all together, wish me luck!) I mean it’s only 30 fucking minutes. I usually waste that staring at my phone or zoned out in the show the kids were watching before I put them to bed. No more of that BS! It’s ME time now.
THE LINE UP
In all honesty.. I will admit that I do not have all 12 of my books picked out for the year. I have about 6 on my list that are MUSTS. I’m still working on what other works of art I’ll be taking on. But I have at least 6 months to figure it out. I’m KIDDING! I’m going to figure it out in the next few days… I’m just doing a little more research.
Here’s what I got so far:
- Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear - By: Elizabeth Gilbert
- You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life - By: Jen Sincero
- Co-Dependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself - By: Melody Beattie
- Uganda Be Kidding Me - By: Chelsea Handler
- Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook - By: Gary Vaynerchuk
- You are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth - By: Jen Sincero
Soooooooooooo you can see what I am focusing on this year… PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT and I’m deeply focusing on my business. BUT that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to read a trashy romance novel, a murder mystery with a twist ending or a biography of someone well respected because I am going to read the EFF outta those too!
Did you know that reading increases intelligence? PLUS it can boost your brain power. Reading regularly improves memory function by giving your brain a good ol fashioned work out. Putting that noggin to work can actually reduce the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease by 2.5 times! Sign me up for that!
Reading also can make you more empathetic. Now I am a HUGE empath already… but some of you…. You may just need a teensy weensy more empathy. He he! Don’t stress! Read! Reading can reduce stress by as much as 68%. (See what I did there!?)
It’s contagious! Eeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkk!! No it’s the good kind I promise! Reading is contagious. Parents…. If your kids see you reading… what do you think they are going to start doing more? Yassss!! Win win! Monkey see, monkey do, right? Just imagine… instead of “I’m bored.” … they wander over to the shelf and grab a good ol book? Amazing right!
I decided to challenge myself to ONE book per month this year for ALL the reasons listed above. But above all that, I honestly miss reading. And I’m tired of missing things I enjoy! I mean there are a lot worse things I could be doing right?! Ha ha!
So grab a book, or 12, and get reading.
